Over the last few months Tashkent Elementary School has been busy with making our computational thinking/understanding visible. Below you'll find images that show our students/teachers engaged with various devices that have been introduced this year. Our workspace has hosted almost all grade levels with various support for project-based learning with an authentic problem set. The biggest goal for the elementary technology program is not the actual use of technology, although it is very helpful, is to develop problem solving skills using technology as a piece of the puzzle to solve problems. We want to solve problems with useful and meaningful solutions.

Computers are everywhere, changing every industry on the planet. But fewer than half of all schools teach computer science. Good news is, we’re on our way to change this! If you've heard about the Hour of Code before, you might know it made history. More than 100 million students have tried an Hour of Code. With the Hour of Code, computer science has been on homepages of Google, MSN, Yahoo!, and Disney. Over 100 partners have joined together to support this movement. Every Apple Store in the world has hosted an Hour of Code, and leaders like President Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrote their first lines of code as part of the campaign. This year, let's make it even bigger. I’m asking you to join the Hour of Code 2018. Please get involved with an Hour of Code event during Computer Science Education Week, December 3-9. Get the word out. Try the Hour of Code yourself—everyone can benefit from learning the basics. Get started at http://hourofcode.com/us Thank you for getting involved! - Mr. Chong The 'Hour of Code™' is a nationwide initiative by Computer Science Education Week [csedweek.org] and Code.org [code.org] to introduce millions of students to one hour of computer science and computer programming.” We have shelves! Our Tinka Lab and Innovation Studio are transforming into more workable spaces for students and teachers alike. A big thank you to our maintenance staff for making the shelves happen and all with recycled materials :) In fact, all the work benches, cubbies and shelves are all made from reused wood. Time to get organized!
We are excited to announce that the Chromebooks for Grades 4 and 5 are almost ready to be deployed. Deployment has been scheduled for Wednesday, August 22nd in the early afternoon with Grade 3's iPads later in the week. Special thanks to Mr. Vadim for working diligently to ensure that the devices are ready for students and teachers.
New BeginningsThe Elementary Technology Department is very excited to welcome back our students, parents and staff. We have made several changes over the summer to our physical space and added many new computational learning devices and materials into out inventory.
We are still unpacking, cleaning and preparing digital devices, but please stop by to say hello and see our new configuration. Please click this link to access the slide show from the iPad Parent Information Session
